Business credit cards
What Credit Score Do You Need for a Business Credit Card?
Banks don't publish a minimum score for business credit cards. In practice, most standard business cards look for a personal FICO score of about 670 or higher, and cards designed for excellent credit typically start around 700 to 750 (Stacker).
Yes, your personal score. For most small businesses, and almost every new one, the bank has little business history to read, so your personal file is what decides.
Here's what the numbers mean, what else the bank looks at, and why the score alone doesn't get you approved.
Credit score ranges for business credit cards
FICO scores run from 300 to 850 (Experian):
| FICO range | Label | What to expect on a business card application |
|---|---|---|
| 800 to 850 | Exceptional | Strong odds on most cards, including the best offers |
| 740 to 799 | Very good | Strong odds on most cards |
| 670 to 739 | Good | Most standard cards are in reach. Cards for excellent credit start around 700 to 750 |
| 580 to 669 | Fair | Fewer options, often lower limits or secured cards |
| Below 580 | Poor | Traditional unsecured business cards are hard to get |
Ranges are a guide, not a promise. Two people with the same score can get different answers, because the bank reads more than the number.
Why your personal score matters so much
A new business has no track record. No years of revenue, no business credit history. So the bank leans on the one record that does exist: yours.
That's why most issuers ask for your Social Security number and pull your personal report when you apply, and why most business cards come with a personal guarantee. We explain what that pull costs you in Does Applying for a Business Credit Card Hurt Your Personal Credit?
What banks read besides the score
The score is a summary. The bank also reads what's behind it:
- Late payments. A recent late payment can sink an application even with a decent score. We look for nothing late in the last 24 months.
- Recent inquiries. A long list of new applications reads like a rush for money. More in How Long Do Hard Inquiries Stay on Your Credit Report?
- Your existing cards and limits. A bank is more comfortable giving you a big limit when you've already handled one well.
- Utilization. How much of your available credit you're using. High balances pull scores down and make banks nervous.
- Income and existing debt. Business cards ask about revenue and income. New businesses can usually list projected or personal income, depending on the issuer.
Why we use 700 as the line
Before any client of ours applies for business funding, we check 4 things. We call them the 4 funding blocks:
- A 700+ score.
- Nothing late in the last 24 months.
- 3 or more cards, one with a $10K+ limit.
- 3 or fewer inquiries in the last 6 months.
This is our own checklist, not a published bank rule. We use 700 because that's roughly where cards built for excellent credit start, and because a file that clears all 4 blocks tends to get stronger answers from the first bank, which shapes what every bank after it sees.
Missing one block doesn't mean never. It means not yet. The fix is usually the file first, then the funding.
How to raise your score before you apply
- Pull your reports from all 3 bureaus. Fix real errors by disputing them (CFPB).
- Pay balances down before your statement dates, so lower balances get reported.
- Stop new applications for a while. Let recent inquiries age.
- Keep old accounts open. Age and available credit both help.
- Pay every bill on time. One new late payment can undo months of work.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum credit score for a business credit card?
There's no published minimum. Most standard business cards look for a personal score of about 670 or higher, and cards built for excellent credit typically start around 700 to 750.
Can I get a business credit card with a 650 score?
Possibly, but options shrink below 670. Expect fewer choices, lower limits or a secured card. Raising the score first usually gets better terms.
Do business credit cards check your personal credit?
Most do. Issuers usually pull your personal credit report and ask for your Social Security number, especially for new businesses.
What credit score do you need for a 0% APR business credit card?
Issuers don't publish one. Check each card's terms for the credit level it recommends. We use 700+ as the line before our clients apply.
Is your file ready for 0% funding?
We check 4 funding blocks before anyone applies: score, late payments, cards and inquiries. See where you stand.
